What to Bring Hiking All NCC students and staff are welcome on trips. Participants should realize that outdoor activities are strenuous and they must be fit to properly participate--see statement below. The leader may request that people not participate if they are not properly prepared.  If you want notices of trips sign up on the listserv to receive e-mail notices of trips

Backcountry Safety
A 31 page pdf mini-course in safety in the wilderness from the Mountain Rescue Association.  Must reading for anyone going into the woods.  Also several other booklets and videos of interest on the MRA website.

Lyme Disease Information (Ticks)

Lyme Disease is a tick-born disease which is endemic throughout this area.  Immediately after every time spent in the outdoors you should always inspect yourself carefully for ticks.  It is generally agreed that the tick must be attached for more than 24 hours for the disease to be spread so prompt removal is important; if you have been bitten, prompt treatment is essential (and usually very effective).  Some sources for more information about Lyme Disease are the American Lyme Disease Foundation,: the Center for Disease Control (CDC), and the links given by the NY-NJ Trail Conference (which also includes links for many other outdoor-related diseases).  The American Lyme Disease Foundation has 2 excellent videos on the Anatomy of a Tick Bite and Proper Tick Removal on their video page .

Acknowledgment of Outing Club Participant Responsibility

Everyone going on trips states that they are fit to participate in strenuous physical activities. It is understood that during participation in Nassau Community College Outing Club Activities, participants may be exposed to a variety of hazards and risks, foreseen or unforeseen, which are inherent in each Activity and cannot be eliminated without destroying the unique character of the Activity. These inherent risks include, but are not limited to, the dangers of serious personal injury, property damage, and death (“Injuries and Damages”) from exposure to the hazards of travel and the Nassau Community College Outing Club does not try to contradict or minimize participant's understanding of these risks. Participants should realize that Injuries and Damages can occur by natural causes or activities of other persons, animals, trip members, trip leaders and assistants or third parties, either as a result of negligence or because of other reasons. Participants should realize that risks of such Injuries and Damages are involved in adventure travel such as Nassau Community College Outing Club Activities and should appreciate that they may have to exercise extra care for their own person and for others around them in the face of such hazards. Participants should realize that on any Activity there may not be rescue or medical facilities or expertise necessary to deal with the Injuries and Damages to which they may be exposed.  All participants in any activity will be required to sign the FSA waiver of liability and follow the student code of conduct.
